Becoming a first-time mom while telecommuting exposed me to an experience that is becoming more prevalent in expecting parents - my employer was in a different state.  For my maternity leave, I went in circles with three different parties: human resources, third-party insurance administrator, and California state EDD. Although each party was friendly, understanding the interactions between the benefits and processes took a lot of back-and-forth. A thorough understanding of the benefits and their interactions was important for planning my leave, and to ensure that all claims are filed timely and correctly.

With over a decade of formal education and work experience as an actuary, I built extensive understanding of insurance product design and contracts. Optimizing with complex rules and attention-to-detail are second nature to me.

I sought out to learn the intricacies of leave management and received CLMS certification (Certified Leave Management Specialist). I want to use the unique combination of my insurance and HR knowledge to help more parents understand their benefits.
