Head of Engineering
Remote position, based in US
This role has tremendous opportunity for growth with the company. As one of the early members of the Penguin team, you will work closely with the CEO, the founding team, and our customers to iterate on our product. You will help drive product and technical roadmaps, and will get support and advice from our technology advisor, who has held roles as a technology executive in various Silicon Valley high growth technology startups and the world’s largest internet technology companies. You’ll collaborate closely with the founder, engaging with prospects, partners, and investors to drive the company’s vision forward.
Key Responsibilities
As Head of Engineering, you will:

Have a process-oriented mindset to own the technical roadmap to achieve and maintain the product requirements, security and compliance requirements

Lead a high-performing engineering team, collaborate closely with the product team to align on goals and priorities

Make critical technical decisions and optimize development processes
-
Mitigate technical risks and ensure compliance with robust development processes and security features
-
Be hands-on and ready to jump into coding to accelerate implementation

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in leading project teams and mentoring other developers

Very experienced in building consumer-facing desktop/mobile web SPA applications, with track record of successful launch

Proficiency in Java (Server-side web frameworks such as Springboot, Mybatis, etc.)

Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and common front-end developer framework and tools (React preferred)

Familiar with the process of developing, maintaining, approving, training and disseminating security policies and procedures

Experience in monitoring security applications, activity logs, resources and issue, utilizing approved security software and hardware
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with SOC 2, answering information security questionnaires

Familiar with building and deployment on AWS platform

Solid understanding of algorithms

Familiar with SEO and/or Web analytics

Prior experience in a startup/early stage company

As Product Manager, you will:

Supervise and responsible for the successful deployment of every release

Mitigate product risks to ensure compliance with federal, state and local leave regulations, security requirements, and client requirements

Be hands-on to support accelerated new client implementations.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in leading projects working directly with customers and internal engineering team

Customer-centric approach leveraging user experience feedback to improve UX/UI

Proficient at writing strong user stories, review design documents from engineers and iterate as needed to enhance product design and functionality

Ability to build and test product configurations for insurance and employer benefits

Oversee security infrastructure and processes, such as responding to client security questionnaires, periodic certification and testing requirements (e.g. penetration tests,
annual certification, risk assessments) -
Establish a strong partnership with external compliance support team to ensure compliance with leave regulations and common marketplace leave benefits

Support business requirements such as annual disaster recovery testing

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proven ability to develop and continually improve business processes
Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in a startup/early stage company

Strong working knowledge of complex excel functions

Expertise in the leave management industry a plus
